Caroline Eber (Standard Chartered) : ouvrir les émergents à la France
La dirigeante de Standard Chartered France a vu le bureau de Paris plus que doubler depuis son arrivée en 2013. Si le Brexit est l’un de ses sujets, elle travaille surtout à apporter aux sociétés françaises la connaissance des émergents.

Le Brexit est l'un des sujets du moment pour Caroline Eber Ittel. Dans le cadre de la sortie du Royaume-Uni de l’Union européenne, c’est Francfort que Standard Chartered a choisi pour devenir le siège continental. Néanmoins, la patronne de Paris va également voir grossir ses rangs. Lorsqu’elle a pris son poste en 2013, Caroline Eber Ittel était à la tête d’une équipe de 17 personnes. Aujourd’hui, formé par une quarantaine d’âmes, le bureau de la capitale française est appelé à passer à 45 voire 60 personnes en vue du Brexit. Si les problématiques techniques seront bien évidemment au rendez-vous, les sujets humains ne seront pas moins importants.
Car l’une des raisons pour lesquelles Caroline Eber Ittel a rejoint Standard Chartered tient dans les valeurs que porte la banque, et qui ont d’ailleurs été magnifiées par son patron, Bill Winters. "J’ai une équipe très soudée et je veux qu’elle continue à croître avec des gens qui partagent les mêmes valeurs", insiste Caroline Eber Ittel. Devraient venir de Londres une partie de ces nouvelles arrivées, tandis que des recrutements compléteront le casting.
Le thème "valeurs" importe à Caroline Eber Ittel qui a été élève au Gymnase Jean Sturm à Strasbourg, le parent de L'école alsacienne. Un lieu "humaniste", où différentes cultures vivent ensemble. Après deux ans de prépa HEC, et un échec aux concours des trois écoles parisiennes, Caroline Eber Ittel redouble de motivation. Elle rejoint l’univers universitaire pour y faire de l’économie et des maths, avant un magistère d’actuariat. A la suite de ses études, et à l’époque de l’émergence des marchés financiers, notre interlocutrice décide d'intégrer une banque bavaroise - depuis absorbée par UniCrédit. Elle travaille alors sur le projet d’implémentation de l'établissement en France.
Caroline Eber Ittel rencontrera ensuite son mari. Le couple décide de s’installer à Paris. Caroline Eber Ittel arrive alors chez Deutsche Bank où elle déroulera le reste de sa carrière avant Standard Chartered. Celle qui a commencé en tant qu’analyste crédit et risques a évolué dans cet établissement qui est devenu au fur et à mesure un mastodonte. Et c’est un autre échec qui a donné à sa carrière un second souffle. Alors qu’elle rate sa promotion de managing director, Caroline Eber Ittel assiste à un élan de solidarité. Notamment celui d’un homme – parti ensuite chez Standard Chartered – qui l’a prise sous son aile pour travailler son MDship. "Dans une société, surtout quand on est une femme, on a besoin d’une personne qui veille sur votre évolution, une sorte de coach, qui vous suit, qui fait que vous êtes visible", rapporte celle qui évoque aussi sur le rôle de sa moitié.
Une fois son titre de MD obtenu, Caroline Eber Ittel prend la tête du coverage. A noter que deux ans plus tôt, l’équipe Merrill Lynch portée par Marc Pandraud avait rejoint Deutsche Bank. Caroline Eber Ittel saisit l’opportunité et développe avec la nouvelle équipe les opérations. Après plusieurs belles années, la banquière est contactée par un chasseur de têtes à qui son nom avait été soufflé, justement, par son ancien coach.
La dirigeante du bureau français de Standard Chartered, mère de trois enfants, n’est pas la seule femme de la banque à un poste pays. L’établissement a en effet une tradition de la diversité : une CEO pour la Chine, l’Inde, le Nigéria ou encore de la zone Europe-USA. Pour sa part, Caroline Eber Ittel compte 45 % d’Eve à Paris et des nationalités très diverses. Il faut dire que le point fort de Standard Chartered est sa présence internationale, et surtout dans les émergents. Créée sous la Reine Victoria pour suivre l’expansion coloniale, la banque aide aujourd’hui les sociétés européennes dans leurs opérations en Afrique, au Moyen-Orient et en Asie. "On apporte à nos clients une connaissance intrinsèque des pays émergents puisqu’on y est présents depuis plus de 130 ans", commente Caroline Eber Ittel.
Côté corporate français, Standard Chartered a par exemple accompagné EDF dans son projet au Cameroun ou Alstom sur le dossier du métro de Dubaï dans le cadre des Jeux Olympiques. "Sur le continent africain, les sociétés françaises sont surtout implantées au Maghreb et en Afrique francophone. Nous faisons le pont vers l’Afrique Subsaharienne anglophone, qui est plus dynamique". "Même si l’activité des émergents peut être en dents de scie, sur le long terme les entreprises y gagneront. Ce n’est pas de l’Europe que viendra le plus gros de la croissance". Et le bureau de Paris de Standard Chartered compte bien en profiter.
