Les soirées Playboy embarrassent le LME
Le London Metal Exchange envisage de mettre en place un code de bonne conduite. La dernière "Semaine du LME" ayant été le théâtre d'une soirée douteuse.

Les mentalités changent, mais dans certains secteurs plus lentement que d'autres. C'est le cas de l'industrie boursière minière, qui essuie à nouveau une polémique. En l'occurrence est visée une soirée douteuse dans un club londonien, durant la "Semaine du LME". Afin d'éviter que son nom ne soit à nouveau accolé aux termes de "justaucorps en satin" (comme vient de le faire Bloomberg qui rapporte ladite affaire), le London Metal Exchange envisage de se doter d'un code de bonne conduite.
Dans le détail, l'un des membres du LME, l'une des plus anciennes firmes de trading de la City - Gerald Group -, a organisé un événement de réseautage au Playboy Club, durant le rassemblement annuel du LME et en utilisant sa marque. À noter que la "Semaine du LME" a attiré 2.000 traders de matières premières en octobre dernier. Pour ne rien arranger, durant cette période, les clubs de strip-tease de la capitale anglaise, Secrets et Stringfellows, ont tweeté des offres spéciales pour les participants à la "Semaine du LME".
Outre le côté discutable de ce genre de soirées de networking, celles-ci viennent affermir l'idée qu'il est difficile pour les femmes de se faire une place dans le milieu financier et encore plus lorsqu'il est spécialisé dans les matières premières. "Alors que d'autres secteurs de la finance ont progressé, le monde du trading des mines et des métaux demeure un bastion à prédominance masculine. La combinaison de l'exploitation minière, qui était historiquement synonyme de travail sale et éreintant, et du trading, où les accords sont souvent négociés en se serrant la main autour d'un verre, fonctionne comme un club de vieux garçons de l'élite londonienne depuis des décennies, sinon des siècles", résume ainsi Bloomberg.
Lors du dîner annuel du LME, mardi soir, l'influente Blythe Masters - ancienne banquière de JP Morgan qui a travaillé dans les matières premières et qui est aujourd'hui spécialisée dans la Blockchain - a fait savoir son agacement quant à ce genre de situations. "Quand on regarde cette seule salle, on voit bien que la diversité des genres dans nos industries est inacceptable", a déclaré la patronne de Digital Asset Holdings. "Les alliés masculins à cette cause sont tout simplement inestimables. Ce n'est pas à moi d'en parler. C'est à vous de croire que cela vaut la peine d'être amélioré". En effet, à la table d'honneur, où prenaient place 40 personnes, seules cinq femmes étaient présentes. Et Blythe Masters est seulement la troisième depuis 1961 à avoir prononcé un discours liminaire.
La polémique de cette semaine vient s'ajouter à celle du dîner du club des présidents, événement caritatif réservé exclusivement aux hommes, où des femmes qui travaillaient ce soir-là de janvier, ont été harcelées sexuellement par les convives, d'après le Financial Times. Selon une personne familière aux discussions, le LME envisagerait d'introduire soit un code de conduite volontaire, pour empêcher ses membres d'organiser des événements qui ne correspondent pas à l'éthique de la maison, soit d'obliger les membres à adhérer au code s'ils souhaitent utiliser la marque "Semaine du LME" pour promouvoir un événement, rapporte Financial News. À noter que la soirée de Gerald Group n'était pas à l'ordre du jour officiel du LME. Néanmoins, l'événement était répertorié dans un guide publié par l'industrie.
