Rémunération polémique au Financial Times, par le FT
Le média britannique a fait état des critiques internes sur l’augmentation de son dirigeant, qui a perçu 2,9 millions d’euros au titre de 2017. Sous la pression, ce dernier rend une partie de la somme afin de financer un fonds pour réduire les inégalités de salaires entre sexes.

Les rémunérations des patrons font partie des nombreux sujets que traite au quotidien le très sérieux Financial Times. Le média britannique, dont les plumes se montrent parfois acérées, n’hésite pas à écrire sur des polémiques, même quand celles-ci concernent sa paroisse. Ainsi, le FT a-t-il publié hier un article pour partager les critiques sur l’augmentation de son dirigeant, tout comme l’ont fait d’autres médias. Il y est expliqué que face aux remarques, John Ridding, directeur général du journal, rend l’enveloppe en question, laquelle permettra de financer un fonds afin de réduire les inégalités de salaires entre hommes et femmes.
Le DG renonce à une partie de son salaire, qui s’est élevé à 2,6 millions de livres (2,9 millions d’euros) pour l'an dernier, après des plaintes exprimées par un groupe de journalistes du titre. « J’ai décidé de réinvestir dans le FT l’augmentation accordée en 2017 ce qui représente 510.000 livres (570.000) euros avant impôts », a-t-il indiqué aux salariés. La somme correspond ainsi à près de 280.000 euros. En priorité, ladite enveloppe sera destinée à favoriser l’accès des femmes à des rôles de direction et à réduire l’écart de salaires entre les sexes au sein du journal. « Le reste du fonds sera employé à aider l’entreprise à atteindre ses objectifs financiers », a ajouté John Ridding.
« Bien que nos performances aient été solides, je reconnais que l'ampleur de l'augmentation substantielle de mon revenu total en 2017 soit perçue comme anormale et ait créé des inquiétudes », a par ailleurs reconnu l’homme fort du journal. Pour mémoire, le titre a été racheté en 2015 par le groupe japonais Nikkei pour 1,2 milliard d’euros. Avant cette vente, John Ridding gagnait environ 1,6 million de livres. Les acquéreurs nippons ont de leur côté précisé que la rémunération de John Ridding avait été évaluée de manière indépendante et qu’elle était « fortement liée aux performances » de l’intéressé. La polémique a débuté après la publication des comptes, qui ont dévoilé une rémunération passée à 2,04 millions puis 2,55 millions de livres.
Le groupe de journalistes qui a fait ressortir les chiffres a dit apprécier le geste de John Ridding. Toutefois, le NUJ (National Union of Journalists) du FT estime qu’il ne va pas assez loin. Il attend que le directeur général précise les détails du plan pour réduire le fossé hommes/femmes, qu’il soit transparent sur sa rémunération pour 2018 et qu’il renonce aux bonus. Si l’augmentation de John Ridding a fait polémique c’est notamment, selon le FT, parce qu’elle a atteint 25% sur un an, soit plus que la médiane de 11% enregistrée pour les patrons des entreprises du FTSE 100. « Le package de 2017 de M. Ridding a attiré l’attention car il s’avère qu’il représente plus de la moitié des bénéfices d’exploitation 2017 du FT, qui ont presque atteint les 4 millions de livres. » Un chiffre qui, selon un porte-parole du Financial Times, ne donnerait pas l'image globale puisqu'il ne prend pas en compte les revenus consolidés des activités mondiales, qui ont dépassé les 20 millions de livres en 2017, soit près du double sur un an.
