Albert Frère est décédé

L'homme d'affaires belge Albert Frère, réputé pour ses investissements avisés, notamment dans de grandes entreprises françaises, est mort lundi, a annoncé sa holding, le Groupe Bruxelles Lambert. GBL "a la tristesse d'annoncer qu'Albert Frère, président d'honneur et actionnaire de contrôle conjoint de la société, s'est éteint ce jour à l'âge de 92 ans", déclare le groupe dans un communiqué. C'est dans les années 50 qu'Albert Frère effectue ses premières acquisitions dans la sidérurgie wallonne. Puis il construit progressivement une société de commercialisation de l'acier qui deviendra vite la première de Belgique, avant de contrôler pratiquement toute la production sidérurgique de Charleroi. Au début des années 80, en pleine crise de la sidérurgie, il cède ses intérêts dans l'acier aux pouvoirs publics et, grâce au capital important réalisé dans l'opération, se lance dans la finance. En 1981, il crée une alliance 50/50 avec le financier québécois Paul Desmarais profitant du chaos engendré par les nationalisations. En 1982, à travers leur holding commune, ils achètent le groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL). GBL est notamment présent au capital de Total, Pernod Ricard, Imerys ou encore Adidas. En 2015, Albert Frère renonce à son rôle de CEO. Depuis la partie institutionnelle a été confiée à son petit-fils Cédric Frère, et la partie opérationnelle à son gendre Ian Gallienne.
