Coronavirus : gare à l'excès de pessimisme
Concernant l’impact sur la croissance mondiale, Didier Saint-Georges, Managing Director chez Carmignac, estime qu’il est bien ambitieux de vouloir se livrer à une quelconque estimation tant un nombre de paramètres inconnus entre en jeu. Tant sur l’évolution du virus que sur les mesures que la Chine va encore mettre en place pour endiguer le phénomène. Pour autant, Haiyan Li-Labbé, analyste actions chinoises au sein de l’équipe actions émergentes, a , elle, tout de même évoqué une fourchette comprise entre 1,3 et 2,3 points de croissance de moins pour la Chine sur le premier trimestre de 2020. Concernant le reste du monde, et ce, en se référant à la demande finale provenant de la Chine, les économies les plus impactées devraient sans surprise être celles de la région : Hong-Kong en premier lieu ou encore Taiwan et la Malaisie. Vient ensuite l’Europe qui serait faiblement touchée puis les États-Unis qui ne le seraient presque pas.
Sur les marchés actions, Didier Saint-Georges explique que les bourses américaines devraient traverser cette tempête sans encombre, en particulier les actions non cycliques. De plus, les États-Unis peuvent compter sur plusieurs soutiens. L’un est le policy-mix accommodant et l’autre est lié à l’arrivée du coronavirus. De fait, la Réserve fédérale américaine (Fed) continue de mener une politique monétaire accommodante au travers de ses trois baisses de taux d’intérêt en 2019 mais aussi du gonflement de son bilan lié aux achats de titres d’Etat que la Fed mène depuis le dernier trimestre de l’année dernière - 60 milliards par mois. Ces deux éléments concourent à soutenir la liquidité aux États-Unis, selon Didier Saint-Georges.
Deuxième facette de ce policy-mix accommodant, le déficit budgétaire des États-Unis qui atteint près de 5% du PIB et qui contribue à soutenir significativement la demande intérieure de l’Oncle Sam. Enfin, les taux d’intérêt à long terme baissent aux États-Unis – le 10 ans a perdu 30 points de base depuis le début de l’année - en partie à cause de l’inquiétude liée au coronavirus dont bénéficient les actifs refuges comme le sont les bons du trésor américain. Ainsi, le coronavirus joue le rôle d’amplificateur de l’assouplissement des conditions financières. C’est une autre histoire pour l’Europe qui est plus exposée à la Chine et qui contient plus de valeurs cycliques. Sa résistance en ce moment est plutôt due à sa moindre valorisation par rapport au marché américain selon Didier Saint-Georges.
Par ailleurs, sur les devises, le renminbi pourrait se déprécier si la Chine décidait d'assouplir davantage sa politique monétaire selon Didier Saint-Georges. Haiyan Li-Labbé n'écarte pas cette idée et explique que ce sont les PME - hôtels, taxis, restaurants - qui vont le plus souffrir du coronavirus, elles qui représentent 40% de l'emploi en Chine et qui vont avoir besoin de mesures d'accompagnement, notamment en termes de besoin en fonds de roulement. Une baisse de la TVA pourrait également être possible pour soutenir la consommation - elle a déjà été baissée de 3% en moyenne l'année dernière.
Enfin, s’il constitue un "choc exogène d’une certaine importance", le coronavirus ne doit pas faire oublier les tendances de long terme et les fondamentaux robustes dont dispose la Chine, souligne Didier Saint-Georges. Oui, Carmignac croît au potentiel de l’Empire du Milieu, c’est pourquoi il y est significativement investi depuis des années. Haiyan Li-Labbé a notamment cité son poids croissant dans le PIB mondial - multiplié par 4 ou 5 depuis 20 ans - ou encore la capitalisation boursière qui atteint plus de 11.000 milliards de dollars. L'analyste de Carmignac a aussi brièvement évoqué la nouvelle économie dans laquelle la Chine peut se vanter de proposer de belles perspectives. La Chine est le premier utilisateur de robots, et sera bientôt le premier producteur - hausse de 44% en deux ans de la production. De plus, si elle représentait seulement 1% des brevets concernant la 4G, elle en représente 32% concernant la 5G.
