Axa fait de la croissance rentable

Le leader français de l’assurance bénéficie d’une activité soutenue – et notamment au sein de sa filiale XL acquise il y a un an – et d’une rigueur de gestion qui lui permet d’accroître sa rentabilité. Cependant, comme toutes les financières, il lui faut manœuvrer dans une conjoncture marquée par les taux d’intérêt négatifs.

Il y a deux sortes de dirigeants. Les malchanceux sont ceux à qui tout arrive. Et les chanceux qui sont ceux qui arrivent à tout. En choisissant Thomas Buberl pour diriger Axa au cours des quinze années à venir, Henri de Castries a opté pour un successeur compétent, brillant mais aussi chanceux. Et c’est un avantage considérable.

En témoignent les résultats semestriels de l’assureur européen. Le chiffre d’affaires d’Axa a progressé de 4 % grâce notamment à une forte croissance des activités d’assurance dommages et de spécialités, à des ventes plus élevées en épargne individuelle et en santé en Asie et à une contribution accrue du Mexique et de la Turquie. Le volume des affaires nouvelles (indicateur très suivi dans le monde de l’assurance) augmente de 2 %, principalement soutenu par une forte croissance en Asie (+8 %) aux États-Unis (+5 %) et en Europe (+2 %) avec une hausse dans la plupart des pays. De même, la marge sur les affaires nouvelles, précieusement surveillée par les analystes s’établit à 40,4 %.

De fait, grâce à cette bonne dynamique commerciale, le résultat opérationnel progresse de 7 % à 3,6 milliards d’euros, reflétant une forte amélioration de la performance en France, en Europe, en Asie et au sein des entités transversales. Ce résultat se trouve soutenu par une hausse du résultat technique, et par une contribution importante d’AXA XL (500 millions d’euros). Ce qui compense la réduction de la contribution aux résultats du Groupe d’AXA Equitable (- 200 millions d’euros) suite à la vente de titres opérée en Bourse. Au total, le résultat courant augmente de 8 % et s’établit à 4,0 milliards d’euros, porté par un résultat opérationnel accru ainsi qu’une hausse des plus-values nettes réalisées. En revanche, le résultat net diminue de 19 % à 2,3 milliards d’euros à cause de l’absence d’éléments non récurrents.

En termes bilanciels, les capitaux propres s’établissent à 66,7 milliards d’euros, en hausse de 4,3 milliards d’euros par rapport au 31 décembre 2018, reflétant la hausse des plus-values latentes sur actifs financiers (+6,1 milliards d’euros) et la contribution du résultat net, partiellement compensées par le dividende payé aux actionnaires. Ce montant se compare à une capitalisation boursière qui n’est que de 54 milliards d’euros.

Compte tenu d’un environnement économique turbulent pour les groupes financiers en raison de l’installation de taux d’intérêt négatifs qui pèsent sur certaines activités d’épargne, Thomas Buberl s’est abstenu de toute prévision sur le restant de l’année. Mais la bourse ne semble pas s’inquiéter puisque le titre a nettement réagi à la hausse alors qu’il a déjà progressé de 21 % depuis le début de l’année. Comme quoi les chanceux sont bien ceux qui arrivent à tout…
