Quel est votre scénario de croissance pour l'Europe et la France pour 2024 ? De quelle manière les trois risques géopolitiques (guerre en Ukraine, conflit israélo-palestinien et les élections présidentielles américaines) affectent-ils vos prévisions ?
Les perspectives 2024 sont très contrastées, entre retournements de tendances et volatilité accrue. La croissance mondiale devrait ralentir pour s’établir à 2,5%, avec un delta au plus haut depuis cinq ans entre marchés émergents et développés (+3,6% contre +0,7% en moyenne). En France comme dans la zone euro, la croissance décélèrera également, autour de +0,5%.
Le réalignement géopolitique global paraît désormais évident. 2024 s’annonce comme une année de transition, avec des tensions et protectionnismes croissants. Les élections en Europe risqueront de perturber les efforts de repositionnement lié à ce nouveau contexte géopolitique.
Selon notre scénario central, le conflit au Proche-Orient ne devrait pas dégénérer en guerre régionale. Une plus grande implication de l’Iran perturberait l’environnement géopolitique.
Outre-Atlantique, une nouvelle présidence Trump pourrait compromettre les relations des États-Unis avec leurs alliés. Moscou sera incité à tenir bon dans le conflit russo-ukrainien, dans l’espoir d’un changement de locataire à la Maison-Blanche.
En tant qu’investisseurs, nous devons identifier les opportunités d’investissement pouvant émaner des évolutions géopolitiques. Aussi, nous regardons vers l’Inde, les pays au cœur des nouvelles chaînes de valeur (Asie) ou les zones disposant de ressources naturelles (Amérique latine notamment).
La remontée des défaillances d'entreprises vous inquiète-t-elle ?
L’augmentation des défauts de paiement concerne à ce stade les entreprises les moins bien notées (CCC). Les fondamentaux des entreprises commencent à se détériorer aux Etats-Unis et en Europe, mais à partir de niveaux solides. Les défaillances devraient ainsi légèrement augmenter, tout en restant à des niveaux proches des moyennes de long terme. Elles concerneront principalement les entreprises faiblement notées et les PME.
La hausse des coûts de financement sera par ailleurs le principal facteur de défaillance. Le mur de la dette n’est pas attendu pour 2024. En revanche, si les banques centrales n’entament pas de baisse de taux, les années suivantes pourraient être plus difficiles pour un certain nombre d’entreprises.
Les Banques centrales ont fortement augmenté leurs taux d’intérêt ces derniers mois, cela vous paraît-il suffisant pour que l’inflation retombe à 2% en rythme annuel ? Etes-vous en faveur du relèvement de cette cible ?
Sauf choc énergétique majeur et compte tenu du recul de la demande, l'inflation devrait se rapprocher des cibles des banques centrales fin 2024 (2.6% en zone euro et aux Etats-Unis).
Les banques centrales peuvent tolérer une inflation légèrement supérieure à 2% et évaluent quand elles pourront infléchir leur politique monétaire. Nous prévoyons un ‘pivot’ vers la fin du premier semestre et des baisses de taux de 150 et 125 points de base pour la Fed et la BCE, respectivement, en 2024. Dans les pays émergents, le processus de désinflation est engagé et les banques centrales disposent déjà d’une certaine marge de manœuvre pour baisser leurs taux.
Cependant, les pressions inflationnistes demeurent : les réalignements géopolitiques et une transition énergétique désordonnée sont une menace pour les prix de l'énergie et des denrées alimentaires. Côté investissement, les changements de tendances en matière de croissance, d'inflation et de politique monétaire nécessiteront d’avoir des stratégies diversifiées et dynamiques.
Les marchés obligataires ont montré de forts signes de nervosité ces derniers temps, pensez-vous que les coûts auxquels se financent Etats et entreprises pourraient encore croître après la fin de la hausse des taux d’intérêt directeurs ?
Jusqu’ici, la hausse des taux a eu un impact limité sur les fondamentaux des entreprises et sur les consommateurs, en raison des liquidités accumulées durant la crise Covid, des faibles besoins de refinancement à court terme et de niveaux d’épargne élevés.
En 2024, nous assisterons à une augmentation structurelle des besoins de financement et à un durcissement des conditions de crédit, en raison de la transmission tardive du resserrement monétaire. C'est pourquoi nous nous attendons à ce qu'un environnement légèrement récessif se matérialise. Les entreprises dont les besoins de refinancement sont les plus importants et la rentabilité la plus faible seront davantage affectées.
En matière d’investissement, la classe d’actifs obligataire sera incontournable alors que les taux sont au plus haut et les banques centrales proches du pivot. Les obligations souveraines et d’entreprise de qualité sont ainsi à privilégier début 2024.
