Sofina mise sur l’intelligence artificielle
Basé à Bristol, au Royaume-Uni, Graphcore est un fabricant de puces électroniques qui a mis au point un nouveau type de processeur conçu spécialement pour l’intelligence artificielle, l’Intelligence Processing Unit ("IPU"), adapté à ce marché en pleine croissance. Il permet de réduire le coût de l’intelligence artificielle dans le cloud et dans les centres de données, tout en améliorant ses performances et son efficacité. Car l'intelligence artificielle nécessite beaucoup plus de puissance de calcul. Selon Graphcore, son processeur fonctionne dix à cent fois plus rapidement que les "puces" traditionnelles.
C’est ce créneau atypique qui a conduit Sofina à acquérir 3,74 % du capital de Graphcore à la fin de l’année 2018. C’est la holding belge qui était chef de file de ce tour de table de 200 millions de dollars. Après cette opération, elle vient d’acquérir une part supplémentaire représentant 2,92 % des actions Graphcore à l’occasion d’une nouvelle levée de fonds d’un montant de 150 millions de dollars.
En plus de Sofina et d'un certain nombre d'actionnaires existants, de grands noms de la haute technologie ont rejoint le tour de table. Dell, Samsung, Bosch, BMW et Microsoft sont parmi les autres investisseurs stratégiques et financiers. De fait, Graphcore est maintenant évalué à 1,95 milliard de dollars.
Lorsque Sofina est entré au capital, ce chiffre n'était que de 1,7 milliard. Les autres licornes (des sociétés en croissance d'une valeur de plus d'un milliard de dollars) présentes dans le portefeuille de Sofina sont la société indienne de fintech Pine Labs, le développeur de l'application d'apprentissage Byju's et le site de revente d’articles d’occasion Vinted. Par ailleurs, dans le même secteur de la très haute technologie, Sofina est actionnaire de ThoughtSpot, qui cherche à analyser les données d’une entreprise à une vitesse fulgurante grâce à l'intelligence artificielle.
